Week 5 Reflection

Uh oh, a quiz! After a week 4 full of data wrangling we got hit with a quiz. It wasn’t anything too crazy, but enough to stump me for a second.

Week 4 was probably the hardest week yet. We really began to dive head first into some gnarly code sets, in which we wrangled, transformed, and visualized data all in one. I mentioned before how I think this is like learning a new language, like when I first entered Spanish class in middle school. There are those days when everything is making sense because it’s just one or two words, but now we’re trying to decipher sentences and paragraphs which can get tough really quick. I’ve found that taking the language line by line and translating the function into its action – “this is mutating the price column into an entirely new column called price_mean and calculating the mean” – makes it easier for me to break this down. Sort of like long Excel formulas, they may seem intimidating but if you break it down into plain English they aren’t so bad.

Best Parts of Weeks 4/5

  • The quiz! It was good to have a bit of a pop quiz and really dig through our own work to find the answers
  • DPLYER: it seems like such a powerful package, the ability to filter rows and select columns, arrange and produce the exact results we want. It seems like a more powerful PivotTable within R
